Counting

ichi 1
ni 2
san 3
shi 4
go 5
roku 6
shichi 7
hachi 8
kyu 9
ju 10

Please note that:

  • The alternate pronunciations of yon for 4 and nana for 7 are not conventionally used (unless referring to grades eg. yondan or nanadan).
  • The key point when counting is to produce a loud, sharp, single syllable that can be used to keep time.
  • If more than 10 counts are required, the count reverts to 1 after 10. It is up to the students to remember how many sets of 10 have been counted.
